Daniel Thwaites Brewery, Lancashire

We have a super range of beers from the Thwaites brewey.  There are 7 beers in the range to cover all tastes and for November we have a super deal of any 4 Thwaites beers for €10.

Wainwright 4.1% ABV 500ml Btl

Exquisitely lovely golden ale. Named after Alfred Wainwright, the renowned Lakeland author who was born in Blackburn, Wainwright is a refreshing golden ale with subtle sweetness and delicate citrus fruity overtones.

Lancaster Bomber 4.4% ABV 500ml Btl

This chestnut-coloured beer is brewed using pale ale and crystal malt, which gives it a full-bodied flavour. A finely balanced hop character is enriched by the late addition of Styrian Goldings as a dry hop in each cask to give a prominent floral hop aroma and warming aftertaste.

Very Nutty Black 3.9% ABV 500ml Btl

Where do you start? A stronger (slightly tongue in cheek ‘export strength’) brew of our double award winning cask mild that is also endorsed by CAMRA as being ‘Real Ale in a Bottle’. Bottle conditioned, for a truer flavour, you’d be Nutty not to try one!

Indus IPA 4.6% ABV 500ml Btl

When Daniel Thwaites was embarking on his brewing career, the INDUS would have been voyaging to the East Indies – trading Lancashire cotton for exotic Eastern delights. Our INDUS Pale Ale celebrates ales of that period with a refreshing brew enriched with abundant hops for flavour that stays fresh and crisp to the finish.
Refreshing amber ale, brewed with four hop varieties for superb taste and aroma.

Double Century 5.2% ABV 500ml Btl

A special beer for a special birthday. Brewed in 2007, the year Daniel Thwaites celebrated its bi-centenary, this amber-coloured ale is full of hoppy flavours with an orange zest finish.

Flying Shuttle 4.9% ABV 500ml Btl

A strong, premium brown ale, lightly hopped, slightly nutty and great bittersweet flavours.  Now the unofficial beer of Lancashire Day, but you shouldn’t wait until Nov 27th to enjoy this one.

Old Dan 7.4% ABV 500ml Btl

Bottle conditioned beer contains live yeast, which means the beer goes through an additional fermentation stage in the bottle that continues right up until you open it. Serve cool not chilled and pour with care to leave any natural sediment in the bottle.
Vibrant copper hue with lovely ‘fruit cake’ flavours. Like fine wine, will age well and mellow over time, with increased fruitiness.

Halloween and the Scary Beer Trio

With Halloween now upon us I decided to scour the shelves and fridges of Molloys to find out if we had any truly scary beers.  Three beers made the grade and they were all from the Wychwood Brewery in Oxfordshire.

The first one up is Hobgoblin Beer.

Traditionally craft brewed with Chocolate and Crystal Malts and a blend of Styrian, Golding & Fuggles Hops to produce a full-bodied Ruby beer that delivers a delicious chocolate toffee malt flavour,  balanced with a rounded moderate bitterness and an overall fruity, mischievous character.  It comes in a 500ml bottle and is 5.2% ABV.

Number 2 on the list is Scarecrow Ale.

Traditionally craft brewed in Oxfordshire using organically grown English Barley Malt and Organic Target Hops.   Scarecrow is a wonderfully refreshing English Ale evoking lazy, hazy days of summer in golden meadows and ripe barleyfields.  A winning combination of tart, citric fruit flavours perfectly balanced by a rich biscuity maltiness and rounded off with a spicy bittersweet finish.  It comes in a 500ml bottle and is 4.7% ABV.

Last to make our scary list is Wychcraft Blond Beer.

Traditionally craft brewed using an innovative blend of 3 hops and 3 malts, Wychcraft delivered a pale straw coloured, crisp, dry, ‘blond beer’ to savour.  A seductive blend of Pale, Lager and Cara Malts give a light and gentle base of delicious dry, biscuit flavours while the addition of English Fuggles, Styrian Goldings and Cascade Hops create a wonderful aromatic and fragrant, zesty character for a highly refreshing beer. It comes in a 500ml bottle and is 4.5% ABV.

As they say down the brewery - What’s the matter Lagerboys….. afraid you might taste something ???

Dungarvan Brewing Company

We've recently listed the 3 beers produced by Dungarvan Brewing Co and they've been selling well.  The three beers are all in 500ml bottles and sell for €3.29 each. Here's more info on them -

Black Rock Irish Stout
A good, old-fashioned bottle of stout. Robust, full-bodied with roasted barley flavours that give a slight coffee taste that is nicely complemented by notes of vanilla and aniseed.  Has been described as “how stout used to taste”! This stout can be enjoyed with robust meat dishes or on its own ‘from the shelf’.  Can even work as a “dessert beer”.

Copper Coast Red Ale
This is a smooth, fruity ale with a small amount of hop bitterness but more of a caramel taste  that makes it a lot easier to drink than the blonde ale. A lot of lager drinkers have said how they didn't *think* they were ale fans, but liked this one. Perfect accompaniment to any roasted meats as the caramel character of both complement each other nicely.

Helvick Gold Blonde Ale
A refreshing, citrusy blonde ale but with a stronger bitter hop flavour.  More of a challenging drink than the others, appeals to people who are ‘into their beers’, but for someone not as used to trying other beers the red may be a better choice.  A good ‘sunny day’ drink. Works very well with spicy food .

Brainblasta

We've just started selling a few beers from The Porterhouse Brewing Co.  Brainblasta is a
big seller.  It's a deep copper coloured brew, offering the complexity of flavour from thrice
hopping and longer fermentation.  This leads to a fruit character from both the late kettle
Goldings and yeast fermentation.  It's 7% abv so be careful.  We have 4 Porterhouse beers
in stock - Brainblasta, Hophead, Porterhouse Red and Hersbrucker Lager.  They're €1.99
each or 4 for €7.

New Beer and an old friend

Here at Molloys we're trying to constantly add new and different products for our discerning customers.  A new lager that we've added this week is Tuskar lager, out first beer from East Africa, this 500ml bottle is in selected Molloys stores for €2.49.

Tusker Lager was the first beer in East Africa, being brewed there since 1922 by Kenya Breweries Ltd. Tusker lager is the winner or over 15 'Monde Selection Gold Medals'. The Monde Selection is an official institution established by the Belgium Government and checks for the highest quality standards in
freshness, flavour and appearance.
Tusker is a medium lager at 4.2% It pours medium yellow in colour
but with little of a head. It is quite crisp and
clean and makes an ideal 'Sunday Afternoon' beer. Tusker leaves a satisfactory after taste. It tastes quite sweet and fruity. It has much more of a taste to it than many
lagers and if you are looking for something different then this is probably worth
checking out.

Victoria Bitter (better known as VB) was one of our best selling beers from Australia for many years.  Unfortunately with the constant mergers and takeovers of the world's largest beer companies in recent years, it became impossible to get VB here.  Until now that it.  We're delighted to have it back on our shelves.  You can now get a 6pk 375ml bottles for only €9.99.

St Patrick's Day

Ahhhhh, who doesn't love St Patrick's Day.  Have a nice lie on, relax, join your friends for a drink and toast the great man himself with a pint or two.  While there's nothing better than a nice pint of Guinness to help you re-affirm your Irishness, we at Molloy's have seen a steady increase in demand for stout's that are not brewed at James Gate.  Blasphemy I hear you say!!!!...well read on!

Young's Double Choclate Stout (UK) 500ml btl 5.2% ABV
This Stout has been recognised as an award-winning brew on several occasions,
including: Brewing Industry International Awards Gold Medal Winner 2000, Silver Medal Winner 2002 and Bronze Medal Winner 1998 and 2004.
Luxurious and at the same time with a hint of decadence, Young’s Double Chocolate Stout has it all, delivering a satisfying, indulgent taste without ever becoming overly sweet.Pale Ale and Crystal malt, Chocolate Malt, a special blend of sugars, Fuggle and Golding hops, real dark chocolate and chocolate essence are combined to deliver a stout of with real credentials.

St Peter's Organic Stout (UK) 500ml btl 6.5% ABV
Fuggles’ and ‘Challenger’ hops plus a blend of 4 local Suffolk barley malts create an aromatic, strong, dark chocolate cream stout with a satisfying bittersweet aftertaste. Gold Medal winner in the International Beer Competition 2003 and 2004 and International Beer Challenge 2006 / World’s 50 Best Beers 2006. Plus it's one of the nicest bottles you'll see.

Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout (USA)355ml btl 10% ABV
I know, even I was shocked when I saw the Americans were getting in on the act and producing stout. The famous Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout, is an award-winning rendition of the Imperial Stout style, once made exclusively for Catherine the Great. They use three mashes to brew each batch of this beer, achieving a luscious deep dark chocolate flavour through a blend of specially roasted malts. We brew it every year for the winter season. It is delicious when newly bottled, but also ages beautifully for years.

All these fine stouts are available in selected Molloys.

St Valentine's Day

St. Valentine, the patron saint of love, was executed in Rome (for performing Christian marriages) and buried there in the 3rd century.  But much later an Irish priest was granted permission to exhume his remains, and now his skeleton lies under the Whitefriar St Carmelite Church in Dublin.

In 1835 an Irish Carmelite priest, Fr. John Spratt, used his Irish charm to convince then Pope Gregory XVI to dig up St. Valentine’s remains and take them home as a gift to his fellow Irishmen and women.

Now love-seeking Irish turn up at his site every St. Valentine’s looking for help in finding that special one.

To celebrate St Valentines Day, Molloys will have Jacob's Creek Sparkling Rose and White Wines at only €9.99 a bottle (11-14 Feb 2011).  We also have Comtesse Alexia Champagne at €22.99 a bottle and Mercier Champagne (owned by Moet) at €31.99.

Non Alcoholic Beers

It's January again and some of you may be looking to try something a little different for New Year.  Below are some of the non alcoholic beers & ciders that we have in Molloys.

BECKS NON ALCOHOL

What this brew lacks in alcohol it makes up for in flavour. Beck’s brewmasters stop the fermentation process before alcohol can form, but not before they achieve the distinctive full-bodied taste and aroma of the finished brew. Light amber in color, Beck’s Non-Alcoholic boasts a full, rich, thick head and balanced bitterness.

Erdinger Non Alcohol

Very popular in Germany, this brand is advertised as as multi vitamin drink to athletes. Erdinger Weissbier 'non-alcoholic' is brewed with the customary care and experience gained from over 110 years of brewing tradition and in accordance with the highest quality standards.

Erdinger's master brewers have succeeded in retaining the aromatic, full-bodied Erdinger character - even without alcohol. It is this unique flavor which has spread the fame of Erdinger Weissbräu far beyond the borders of Germany.

Baltika 0

A huge favourite and definitely my favourite non alcoholic lager.  You wouldn't know it was alcohol free when drinking.  This Russian brand has been repeatedly declared the best alcohol-free beer at Russian and international professional contests. In 2006 the Baltika №0 received a most prestigious award: a silver medal in the Alcohol-Free Beer category at the International Tasting Contest of the Brewers’ Association — the World Beer Cup 2006. In 2008 this brand was awarded a bronze medal in the Low Alcohol Packaged category at the Australian International Beer Awards contest as well as the Platinum Osiris in the Best Alcohol-Free Beer category of the professional Osiris Contest at the X Big Moscow Beer Festival. In addition, this brand was declared the best by the results of people’s tasting at the beer festival in Moscow.

Kopparberg Non Alcoholic Pear Cider

The first alcohol free pear cider, it delivers the same great taste as with all
Kopparberg ciders.  Available in 500ml bottles.

If you interested in purchasing any of these products then find your
local Molloys Liquor Stores at molloys.ie
